Measles Infection In Northern Ireland

There have been 3 cases of Measles infection in NI since the start of 2008. This is an unusual occurance as measles has become an extremely rare infection due to the success of the MMR vaccine. Two of these 3 cases acquired their infection outside NI. Several European countries including the UK have seen a recent increase in the number of Measles cases.

All parents are urged to ensure that their children receive two doses of MMR. The first dose is offered at 15 months and the booster dose is given prior to starting school at age 4. If your child has not had two doses of MMR please speak to your Health Visitor or to any of the Doctors. It is never too late to organise the vaccine which is extremely safe. It will give your child maximum protection against Measles, Mumps and Rubella.
