HRT and Breast Cancer

The Million Women Study published in the Lancet has attracted a lot of media attention. The study confirms the previous findings that all forms of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) especially the combined (oestrogen plus progestogen) HRT cause a small rise in the incidence of breast cancer. This increase becomes apparent within 1-2 years of starting treatment with HRT. The risk of breast cancer begins to decline when HRT is stopped.

The Committee on the Safety of Medicines has concluded that for short term use of HRT for the relief of menopausal symptoms, the benefits outway the risks for most women. The pros and cons of longer term use of HRT should be discussed with all patients and reviewed at least once a year. Women on HRT who wish to explore the issues raised by this study should make a routine appointment with their doctor. It is important for all women to be "breast aware" and attend for breast screening from the age of 50 years.
